But there were a few who realized that the price was steep and the losses irrecoverable. One of the earliest and most eloquent voices to be raised in mourning for the loss of nature in, America or elsewhere, was the New England transcendentalist, Henry David Thoreau. To Thoreau, born in 1817, the destruction of the wilderness and the retreat of pastoralism before advancing industrial capitalism were grievous wounds on the soul and spirit of men and women. Only in "wildness" could the world be preserved, he warned.

29 Thoreau can be regarded as the forefather of American environmentalism. His passionate insistence on the spiritual dependence of humans on nature and even some of his prescribed tactics are part of the basic primer of values and techniques of today's environmental movement. But it was another American Yankee, George Perkins Marsh of Vermont, who made the first systematic and influential assessment of the serious and permanent damage that human activity can inflict on the natural world. S. ambassador to Turkey and then to Italy, observed nature from neither a romantic, transcendentalist perspective nor from a narrow, utilitarian one.

I did not, however, wish to join the secretariat. That would have made me a part of the story I was covering, to me a violation of the journalistic ethic. Moreover, I did not want to be in the position of having to submit what I had written to an employer for editing and change. So I requested that I be given the promised access unconditionally. To Strong's great credit, he agreed immediately and kept to his word to the end. I raised money from several foundations (acknowledged elsewhere in these pages) and was able to pursue the research and writing independently.
