The United States wants these countries into NATO and the EU because it assists us in the war on terrorism and puts a tighter perimeter around Russia and slams the door on future Russian expansionism, but our European allies are not much in favor of further enlargement because to bring these countries up to acceptable standards will mean huge subsidies for which the Europeans will have to pay.
