I'm not Gawuff. I'm Gawuff. Imitation is particularly easy to observe in relation to intonation. Just before a child starts to use actual words you will notice utterances coming out that are full of expressive intonation patterns that express surprise, enquiries, annoyance and the usual pleading. When adults address children they usually use some form of modification of their language, which makes the message easy to follow. You can tell people who are unaccustomed to being near children because they fail to make the right modifications or, more humiliating for the child, they overcompensate in relation to the child's age.

In your reading you can start to note phrases that link ideas. In the following, phrases are given in brackets. Cause and effect (as a result of ) Making things clear (in other words) Conceding a point (even though) Qualifying a statement (as far as we know) Making a different or opposing point (on the other hand) Linking through time (some time later) Summarising (in a word). The emphasis now in language learning is that you should find out how to use language to express the meaning you want. The more you know about the form of the language you are studying, the better you are able to express detailed meaning, because grammar is only a means to an end.

The knowledge you need can be summarised under these headings: Knowledge about the form of the language Knowledge about how the language is used in different situations Knowledge about putting the language together in speech and writing Words to describe what you know 26 KNOWING A LANGUAGE: WHAT DOES IT MEAN? 27 According to one student, some courses concentrate mainly on the form of the language (pronouncing and spelling words properly), forgetting that the social rules are important. So, too, is the business of making sure what you say or write fits in with everything else that is being said and written.
