7). Both equations include a reference temperature which is often 0°C, sometimes 25°C. It is important to know the value of this reference temperature, particularly if data are being collected from more than one source. Above it was stated that enthalpy represents the energy content of a stream. It will now be appreciated that it represents the energy content of a stream, with respect to some standard state that is taken to have zero enthalpy. Today enthalpy and other relevant data 39 of most compounds are readily found in physical property computer databases.

From steam tables the enthalpy of (a) the superheated inlet steam, (b) the saturated outlet vapour and (c) the saturated outlet liquid can be found. 88 (2749 -640) = 1856 kJ kg- 1 This is equivalent to 57 per cent of the energy initially available in the inlet stream. The energy source for the production of steam is not necessarily a fuel; process streams undergoing exothermic reactions are an alternative source of heat and the energy extracted from a sulphuric acid plant is as valuable, in terms of revenue, as the acid produced.

24 2 Process Design A process plant is a network of interconnected vessels joined by pipes. Obviously it is important to calculate the flows through every vessel and pipe so that they can be correctly sized. This must be done not only for the conditions which exist during normal production but also for those conditions which appertain during the start-up period and for those conditions which could occur in the event of an emergency shut-down. Certain pipes and vessels are specified solely for the latter purpose.
