Interest in battlefield tourism is increasing in line with other forms of tourism experience and it can be expected that in the future, military heritage will continue to be an important touristic activity. The diversity of battlefields explored in this chapter indicates that there remains considerable scope for incorporating new forms of battlefield tourism into the current catalogue of sites and places that are recognised as being of interest to the tourist. Unfortunately, it is highly likely that in the future, as in the past, humanity’s inability to live in peace will add to the already extensive list of battlefield sites.

Some of these have been identified previously as ‘battleless’ battlefields, others may be as mundane as the site of a military barracks, prisoner of war facilities, war cemeteries or logistical installations. 1. Collectively, the military history of the region, which lasted only for a short period prior of the Second World War, is remembered in the form of a stone garden at Rocky Creek, formerly the site of a large World War II-military hospital. 2 illustrates the entrance to the Memorial Park created to remember this aspect of the military heritage of the region.

Of the 200,000 acres of privately owned Civil War battlefields, approximately 10,000 acres is being lost each year to redevelopment (Goodheart, 2005). This is despite the enormous popularity of Civil War re-enactments and the large numbers of people who visit Civil War battlefields. One battlefield, the site of the three-day Battle of Gettysburg, which cost 40,000 troops killed or wounded, receives two million visitors each year (Goodheart, 2005). More recent battlefields, particularly where the original combatants or their relatives are able to revisit in the quiet of peace, have also become popular tourism attractions (Newark, 2001).
