As written words are both pictorial and linguistic objects, neither group of advocates has had the whole story. Indeed, it is still not certain that anyone has the whole story, but what is certain is that written words are symbols; hence, children, in being taught to read, might profitably be taught something about the idea of representation itself and something about the role of symbols in that process. The whole word and the phonics approaches are primarily means to an end; but too often these means become ends in themselves.
3. A word is a syntactically interpreted picture. When formal ordering rules are applied to semantically interpreted objects, the result is strings of items that stand in formally specifiable relations to each other. We can describe a word as misspelled when it does not abide by the conventions established for its representation; and we can speak of a sentence as ungrammatical when its components, the individual word classes, do not stand in the agreed upon syntactic relations. A sentence may be semantically opaque or semantically empty; but in both cases its words will abide by certain syntactic rules that govern their relation.
2. A picture is a semantically interpreted mark. Of all possible kinds of marks the ones that we can interpret are called pictures. The rules for interpretation may be formally established, as is the case for the marks that we call Arabic numerals, or individual letters of the alphabet or ampersands. The rules may be informal, as is the case with most modern or abstract paintings whose interpretation has not yet been formalized, or cartoons or caricatures, or arrows or simple line drawings. All objects have assignable meanings, of course.
