I also consider what implications Complexity may have for our understanding of conflict analysis, design and planning, management and coordination, and monitoring and evaluation (M&E). I conclude this chapter with a discussion on the implications of Complexity for the ethics of peacebuilding, and in particular, I address the unintended consequences C.
The insights we have gained from Complexity, and especially from the processes of emergence and self-organisation, inform us, however, that social systems build themselves. External actors like the UN or international NGOs can only influence the process. An approach informed by insights from Complexity would have peacebuilders facilitate inductive processes that assist knowledge to emerge from the local context, where such knowledge is understood as provisional and subject to a continuous process of refinement and adaptation.
