There are a number of different learning style models. Here I will use Peter Honey and Alan Mumford’s learning styles categories developed from David Kolb’s work. Honey and Mumford identify four predominant types of learners: activists, reflectors, theorists, and pragmatists (see figure 2-1). Although any given classroom will have learners in each one of the quadrants shown in the figure, this step is your chance to see if the particular learning group you are working with tends to fall most often in one or two categories.

Com. a librarian-centric position that didn’t make sense to students. At the least, the workshop descriptions should not be a de-motivator for the client or learners, and at best they should be one of your best marketing techniques for the workshop. Note that good workshop titles and descriptions are also useful when workshop participants are being “forced” to attend by a professor or supervisor or other authority. A compelling description has the possibility of creating some enthusiasm and interest in learning.

When I first began work as a teaching assistant for the library, I could not believe how emotional our design team members would get about need-to-knows and nice-to-knows. After teaching workshops for two years, I now understand the emotional part of the design process. There is so much information out there from which our students could benefit. Deciding what to teach them is tough, and it’s easy to get your ego involved as you fight for what you believe is necessary. The struggle is worth it, though.
