This does not mean that Azotobacter spp. will not use amino acids, only that their growth on these organic forms is much less satisfactory than on inorganic sources as N 2' ammonia or nitrate (WILSON and LIND 1943). HORNER and ALLISON (1944) reported that of 35 organic compounds tested, Azotobacter grew readily only on urea, aspartic acid, asparagine, adenine and glutamic acid. The blue-green algae also appear to prefer the inorganic sources of nitrogen, but for most of the only recently discovered N-fixing species little information is available.

N fixed/mg. sucrose used. Using a fermentor specially constructed to have the high equivalent sulfite value of 10 mmole 02/L. , these workers obtained during one hour of the exponential period of growth (fixation), a total of 175 flg. N/ml. fixed, considerably more than that reported for incubation periods of several days in most previous studies.

The following sections will deal with these in detail, but here some of the general characteristics of the fixation process will be discussed. Probably the most significant statement that can be made is that, until comparatively recently, fixation of N 2 by all the agents was low in quantity (measured by fig. ), slow in rate (measured by the specific rate constant of fixation) 2, and inefficient (measured by fig. N fixed/mg. carbohydrate used). For example, most of the communications in the older literature (say, prior to 1930) reported total fixation of 30-lO0 fig.
