Harshvanti is a single career woman who had recently had an auto accident on a mountain road. An injury threatened the sight in one eye and her hopes of continued mountaineering. She came to meet me at my hotel after she had gone down to the river for puja, wearing a dark kurta. Her wavy hair was cut short, framing a long, oval face. She brought her friend Satish Dayal to our meeting because after nightfall she did not want to walk home alone, her night vision having been impaired by the injury.

His honking was almost an involuntary tic. He honked at people, animals, and all other vehicles whether they were faster or slower, and would speed up just to honk at the rear of another vehicle. He didn’t even spare groups of children on their way to school who were forced to share the road for lack of alternative. At one point he appeared to be honking at a pile of earth and rubble that had fallen into the roadway. In the front seat a slender, young sari-clad woman sat crunched into the window, leaning out from time to time to throw up, either because of the jerky driving on the curving road, or because she was pregnant, or both.

I only recognized a few of them, but he wanted me to repeat the names after him. When the brass pot was empty he scooped up more water from the river and continued the litany. I repeated the foreign sounds as best I could in a firm voice to match his near shout. Then I caught a mention of money between the sacred names. He wished long life for my deceased mother and father, then said something about four hundred rupees. Finally the ceremony ended and there was nothing but the bargaining left. I tossed the flowers into the swirling river and gave him a hundred rupees, a little more than two dollars.
