LinuxBIOS Let's take a close look at a few files from the LinuxBIOS project. gov/linuxbios/): What is LinuxBIOS? We are working on making Linux our BIOS. ). While there is a standard for this (PXE from Intel), it has a lot of limitations. By far the most important function of the BIOS is to support obsolete code, such as DOS. Modern operating systems such as Linux have absolutely no use for what the BIOS does. Still worse, many BIOSes do a poor job of configuring the PCI bus for systems such as Linux.

If you're writing this code, you'll have your nose deeply buried in the user manuals for your processor, your processor's supporting chipset, and the devices you're setting up. After the initial chipset and hardware initialization, the BIOS then loads the kernel (or the kernel loader) into memory and starts it running. On a PC, once Linux is running it generally ignores the BIOS, so in this book we'll also ignore all the BIOS functionality used by other operating systems such as Microsoft Windows but ignored by Linux.

The primary advantage to be derived from using any of these systems is that it allows you to build custom functions to be added according to well-defined standards in a well-known, documented environment. But notice that I said build—meaning that you have already determined that some Page 59 Embedded Linux elements of your product will have to be engineered, designed, and constructed by you. What's more, you've also determined that your performance or throughput requirements demand this level of sophistication.
